Emmanuel Dekoninck, comédien en diable !

En me documentant pour faire cette interview, j’ai eu la surprise de découvrir que tu avais également écrit la musique de quelques spectacles...

En fait, j’ai fait de la musique depuis toujours, j’ai fait l’Académie de Musique à Hannut, j’ai beaucoup joué avec des copains, et puis quand j’ai débuté au théâtre, on m’a demandé de faire des bandes son pour des spectacles, et j’ai commencé à y travailler avec mon ordi. Et le premier truc que j’ai vraiment composé pour le théâtre, c’était LES HÉROS DE MON ENFANCE qui était un travail de fin d’année de ma classe au Conservatoire. . Ce spectacle a très bien marché et ce qui est sympa c’est qu’il y a maintenant 2 troupes amateur qui ont repris les musiques. L’autre gros truc que j’ai fait c’est L’OPÉRA DES GUEUX qu’on a fait avec Bernard Damien. Je fais la musique par plaisir et quand on me le demande, mais je ne me considère pas du tout comme un professionnel en cela.

Toujours en marge de ton activité principale de comédien, tu as – la saison dernière – produit et mis en scène LE LABORATOIRE DES HALLUCINATIONS qui a fait ici l’objet d’une interview avec un des comédiens : Denis Carpentier [1]. C’était ton idée ?

Emmanuel DekoninckOui. C’est un spectacle que j’ai fait de A à Z. J’avais envie de faire un spectacle comme j’avais envie d’en voir, et j’avais surtout envie d’intégrer la musique aux émotions. Et attention, je ne suis pas du tout metteur en scène. Je ne fais pas une mise en scène en un mois et demi comme c’est souvent le cas, donc j’ai vraiment travaillé sur ce concept pendant 2 ans. D’ailleurs, je continue à travailler dessus et je ferai encore probablement quelque chose de mieux - sans doute mieux - et de plus ciblé, en tirant les leçons de cette première expérience. En tout cas, si c’était à refaire, je demanderais à quelqu’un d’autre – dont c’est le métier – de prendre en charge la production, c’est-à-dire tout le travail parallèle.

Quelles ont été tes plus grosses difficultés ?

D’abord de trouver des sous, parce que c’était un projet très ambitieux dans lequel il fallait des sous. Pas beaucoup de sous, mais des sous quand même… À côté de cela, il y avait aussi cet aspect administratif très contraignant, avec les contrats, les droits d’auteurs… La seconde difficulté, mais qui me faisait moins peur, était de gérer l’équipe. Mais à l’exception de la mise en scène, j’avais déjà fait cela avec LES HÉROS DE MON ENFANCE puisque je m’étais occupé de tout. Et puisque je joue quand même assez souvent, je sais comment fonctionne une pièce de théâtre. Et tout cela m’a beaucoup plu, parce que j’avais pris des gens que je connaissais. Même si c’était beaucoup de travail, je ne peux pas dire que c’était compliqué. Il y a eu des problèmes comme dans tous les spectacles, mais on a pu les gérer et finalement ça a été une réussite. En tout cas, moi je suis ravi du résultat et du bilan, que ce soit moral ou financier. Il y a des journalistes qui ont adoré, disant qu’on était dans les meilleurs spectacles et puis un ou deux autres qui n’ont pas aimé et pas compris. Mais je trouve cela intéressant. C’est un truc assez radical et j’aimais bien que cela le soit vraiment. Et comme je suis ravi du résultat, je ne m’arrêterai pas en si bon chemin … Mais ce sera dans 2 ou 3 ans !

Et si tu n’étais pas comédien ?

J’aurais pu faire plein de choses parce que je m’intéresse à plein de choses. D’ailleurs, quand je suis rentré au Conservatoire, je ne savais pas ce que j’aurais pu faire d’autre si jamais je ratais l’examen d’entrée vu qu’il eût été trop tard pour m’inscrire dans une autre école, et alors pendant un an, j’aurais vendu du fromage de chèvre sur des marchés. Et si ça se trouve, je serais devenu maraîcher et j’aurais peut-être été très heureux comme ça ! Plus sérieusement, je crois que j’aurais travaillé dans la communication. Et puis un truc qui m’aurait bien plu, c’est de faire de la radio. J’adore la radio

Ah oui, tout à fait.

Pour toi le succès, c’est quoi ?

Emmanuel DekoninckJe n’en sais rien. Parce qu’on a la chance de vivre en Belgique, un pays où le succès est quelque chose de très relatif. Le succès personnel c’est avoir la chance de travailler, de faire les choses que j’aime, d’avoir la chance de pouvoir accepter les choses que j’aime et de refuser celles qui ne m’intéressent pas. Moi si j’ai ça, je suis heureux et je n’ai pas besoin de plus. De toute façon, en Belgique, il ne faut pas avoir plus d’ambition que cela, parce que c’est un pays où le star-system n’existe pas. Et c’est très bien ! (rires) Oui, personnellement, je trouve cela très bien.

En lisant le programme de DON JUAN ET FAUST, à l’affiche en ce moment, j’ai vu que tu jouais le rôle de l’étudiant Wagner (un rôle relativement mineur dans la plupart des Faust) aux côtés de Itsik Elbaz (Don Juan) et d’Angelo Bison (Faust) et puis là, une surprise diabolique m’attend : tu as un rôle magnifique car derrière Wagner se cache Méphisto.

C’est vrai que j’ai beaucoup de chance qu’on me propose de beaux rôles, mais attention, j’ai aussi des petits rôles comme celui de l’abbé dans IL NE FAUT JURER DE RIEN qui va se donner prochainement au Parc dans une mise en scène de Pierre Fox.

Et ça t’amuse aussi ?

Ah oui, énormément. Pour être sincère, c’est reposant d’avoir un petit rôle après avoir fait 2 rôles costauds à la suite l’un de l’autre [2]. Ça fait du bien d’avoir quelque chose de plus léger. Pour moi, ce n’est pas une question de longueur : il y a aussi des petits rôles qui sont très intéressants. Et puis jouer au Parc est très confortable : on a sa place au parking, on nous fait des costumes sur mesure, on a sa petite loge, on nous traite aux petits oignons. Donc c’est presque des vacances !!!

Et ce que tu joues en ce moment ?

On est content. On a une bonne presse [3] et surtout on est très heureux que DON JUAN ET FAUST marche si bien avec les étudiants car c’est toujours un défi.

Quels rôles aimerais-tu encore jouer ?

Eh bien, j’ai de la chance car j’ai pu jouer les rôles dont j’avais vraiment envie, à savoir Hamlet et Treplev (La Mouette). D’ailleurs, j’aimerais beaucoup rejouer Treplev. Sinon, j’adore Shakespeare. En fait, j’ai envie de jouer des rôles différents que je n’aurais pas encore faits, et je suis assez content de prendre de l’âge, parce qu’il y a toute une série de rôles qui s’ouvrent… Que ce soit dans le répertoire classique ou contemporain, les rôles les plus intéressants ne sont pas nécessairement des rôles de jeunes. Encore que, de nouveau, j’ai eu beaucoup de chance de ne pas avoir à jouer des rôles de « jeune premier traditionnel »

Qu’est-ce que le fait d’être comédien t’a apporté dans ta vie personnelle ?

Il m’a d’abord fallu passer le cap de la déception, parce qu’on idéalise un peu ce métier et qu’on est forcément déçu puisque - par définition - les idéaux n’existent pas ! Puis ça a passé et j’ai adoré ce que j’ai fait. Et clairement cela m’a apporté énormément dans ma vie personnelle, ne serait-ce qu’en termes de culture. Chaque pièce fait que l’on s’intéresse à une époque, à une histoire, à un auteur et à une manière différente de voir la vie. Par exemple sur DON JUAN ET FAUST, je me suis intéressé à la philosophie. Tout d’un coup, j’ai lu un livre sur la philosophie et puis j’en ai acheté d’autres. Et c’est par le biais du théâtre que j’en arrive là. Et puis, il y a aussi et surtout les rencontres, parce que ce métier est plein de gens passionnants. Ce sont des rencontres humaines qui nous transforment. Moi, ma compagne c’est une comédienne, donc rien que cela c’était une bonne rencontre ! C’est sûr que c’est un métier qui influe fort sur la vie privée, ne serait-ce que – très pratiquement – par ses horaires décalés.

Quel conseil donnerais-tu à un futur comédien ?

C’est très simple : c’est d’être le plus authentique et le plus honnête possible. Pour moi, c’est la clé de la réussite dans le théâtre, j’en suis persuadé. Surtout ne pas vouloir être quelqu’un d’autre ou de ressembler à quelqu’un d’autre, ni dans le travail, ni au niveau du jeu, ni dans les rapports humains. Ça permet entre autres de ne pas se faire marcher sur les pieds et aussi d’être disponible.
