La Captive, op. 12
La Captive is the haunting portrait of a single immigrant mother who fights for a decent
life for her and her child. Faced with the barriers of bureaucracy, prejudices, and inner
despair she searches the depths of her soul for the strength to continue. As much a musical journey as an emotional one, this program draws from a wide range of musical sources – from Schubert, Mahler, Berlioz, Chausson, Saint-Saëns, Ravel, to Piazzolla and Schönberg. Accompanied by first-person witness accounts and excerpts from the work of Turkish artist Hüseyin Bahri Alptekin, La Captive brings the listener face to face with humanity’s lack of decency, empathy and compassion. La Captive marks the second collaboration between mezzo-contralto Sarah Laulan and David Ramael, with BOHO Players. La Captive will also highlight BOHO Players’ residency at M HKA. The concert will use images and video fragments from M HKA’s exhibit ‘Democratic Luxury’, featuring the work of Hüseyin Bahri Alptekin, which runs from 15 October 2015 until 31 January 2016.
